{"id":3251,"date":"2025-03-24T12:12:09","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T12:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/?p=3251"},"modified":"2025-03-24T12:12:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T12:12:11","slug":"explosive-anger-and-conflict-avoidance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/en\/explosive-anger-and-conflict-avoidance\/","title":{"rendered":"Explosive Anger and Conflict Avoidance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On more than one occasion, I have worked with people who occasionally\u2014very occasionally\u2014experienced brief but intense outbursts or moments of anger that left them feeling guilty and ashamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These outbursts didn\u2019t just affect them; they also impacted those around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, these <strong>issues with anger or frustration<\/strong> come hand in hand with <strong>difficulties<\/strong> in dealing with <strong>conflict<\/strong>. Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"why-do-we-struggle-with-conflict\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do We Struggle with Conflict?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons vary from person to person, but there is often a common pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans learn about the world throughout life, but <strong>what we learn in childhood<\/strong> lays a strong foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why, when looking at the early personal history of <strong>people who struggle<\/strong> with conflict, it\u2019s common to find <strong>elements such as<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of their attachment figures had <strong>particularly violent, dramatic, or frightening reactions<\/strong> to any form of conflict.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>household dynamic<\/strong> where problems or conflicts were <strong>never openly discussed<\/strong>, and everything was simply ignored until time made it disappear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were <strong>&#8220;more important&#8221; issues at home<\/strong> (illness, financial problems, etc.), which led them to learn that expressing their own needs was something to be avoided.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>People who struggle with conflict <strong>learned at some point that confronting others<\/strong>\u2014whether by setting boundaries or asking for something\u2014<strong>would only lead to more trouble than it was worth<\/strong>. So instead, they yield, they don\u2019t ask, they don\u2019t contradict, and they try to take up as little space as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While these early experiences play a major role, our relationship with conflict <strong>is also shaped by other environmental factors<\/strong>, such as gender roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-does-this-have-to-do-with-anger-or-sudden-rage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does This Have to Do with Anger or Sudden Rage?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When we don\u2019t allow ourselves to express<\/strong> our pain or what bothers us. When we don\u2019t set boundaries with those who hurt us. When we don\u2019t ask for anything from others and take on everything alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We start accumulating pressure, like a volcano, a pressure cooker, or a balloon inflating more and more.<\/strong> The stress, pressure, pain, and discomfort build up\u2014until they explode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When our boss mistreats us, we end up doing most of the chores at home, and we go through life trying not to inconvenience anyone\u2026 Then, one day, we spill coffee on ourselves, and it wouldn\u2019t be surprising if we shouted insults and smashed the cup on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-can-we-do\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can We Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is simple: we need to <strong>recognize what is building up pressure so we can address it, reduce that pressure, and prevent it from leading to an explosion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"emotional-expression-and-identifying-needs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emotional Expression and Identifying Needs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To address the things that are weighing on us, we need to be able to identify and express our emotions effectively in order to improve our situation\u2014either by reducing or eliminating the things that harm us or by asking for and obtaining what benefits us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, we should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recognize<\/strong> our emotional states, dissatisfaction, and stress levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Identify<\/strong> our needs. What needs to change in my life to improve how I feel? What is overwhelming, hurting, or bothering me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communicate<\/strong> those needs. This can take the form of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Asking for help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distancing yourself from people or situations that harm you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setting clear boundaries\u2014with others and sometimes with yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"you-can-do-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Can Do It<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, if you struggle with conflict, the last step (<strong>Communicating<\/strong>) might feel the most <strong>challenging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to understand that if you\u2019ve spent your whole life avoiding conflict as much as possible, your body (and nervous system) will naturally react to the idea of facing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, <strong>don\u2019t be surprised if you feel nervous<\/strong>. Or if you feel strange. Or if you procrastinate. You\u2019re learning something new\u2014something that once felt scary or uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/que-es-la-aceptacion-y-porque-es-esencial-para-la-salud-mental\/\">Embrace that initial discomfort<\/a> because it\u2019s a necessary part of the process. Don\u2019t be too hard on yourself if you procrastinate\u2014just keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may help to <strong>start with small steps<\/strong>\u2014from asking a waiter for something to telling a loved one about a small thing that bothered you or a preference you\u2019d like them to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"emotional-regulation-matters-in-anger-issues\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emotional Regulation Matters in Anger Issues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the steps of <strong>recognizing<\/strong> and <strong>identifying<\/strong> emotions, we find key elements for emotional regulation and anger management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many times (especially among men), we lack both the tools and the &#8220;permission&#8221; to listen to and express our emotions in an <a href=\"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/comunicacion-asertiva-como-dominar-el-arte-de-decir-lo-que-piensas-sin-conflictos\/\">assertive<\/a> way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning to <a href=\"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/como-gestionar-las-emociones\/\">manage our emotions<\/a> is essential to prevent them from building up and catching us off guard, leading to unnecessary problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll find articles on the blog\u2014like the one linked above or <a href=\"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/como-controlar-emociones-y-sentimientos\/\">this one<\/a>\u2014that may help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"conclusion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we explored the connection between difficulties in facing conflict and problems with anger or spontaneous outbursts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, <strong>we learn early in life<\/strong> that conflict can be <strong>dangerous<\/strong>, too <strong>painful<\/strong>, or simply a <strong>taboo<\/strong> topic. From that point on, we <strong>keep everything inside<\/strong>, avoid burdening others with our needs, and <strong>overload<\/strong> ourselves with responsibilities and unresolved emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This overload can sometimes lead to <strong>explosions<\/strong> of aggressive behavior that are completely out of place\u2014affecting those around us and leaving us feeling <strong>ashamed<\/strong>, <strong>guilty<\/strong>, and <strong>regretful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To break the cycle, we need to <strong>learn to tune into<\/strong> our emotional states, stress levels, and needs. No era un retiro de silencio. Desde luego, no era la intenci\u00f3n. Simplemente pas\u00f3. Tampoco sal\u00ed de casa en una semana. Estaba todo nevado, hab\u00eda varios metros de nieve all\u00e1 fuera. Y no es que no pudiera salir\u2026 simplemente no lo hice. No os puedo explicar muy bien a d\u00eda de hoy porqu\u00e9. Tampoco se lo dije a nadie. Todo esto muchos a\u00f1os antes de pandemia.\n \nAntes de eso, creo que sent\u00eda bastante \u201cdependencia\u201d a estar con personas continuamente (aqu\u00ed est\u00e1 la clave), tener planes constantemente, rodearme, incluso a tener personas atentas a m\u00ed. Despu\u00e9s de esto, no me volvi\u00f3 a dar tanto miedo estar conmigo misma. (Ahora lo necesito y es de lo que m\u00e1s me gusta). Tambi\u00e9n me puse a buscar personas con las que entablar una relaci\u00f3n genuina y significativa. Es curiosa la mezcla.
