{"id":3147,"date":"2025-01-27T11:22:18","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T11:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/?p=3147"},"modified":"2025-01-27T11:22:18","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T11:22:18","slug":"why-does-your-brain-think-about-things-you-dont-want-to-think-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/en\/why-does-your-brain-think-about-things-you-dont-want-to-think-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Does Your Brain Think About Things You Don\u2019t Want to Think About?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Your Brain Has a Mind of Its Own<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p><strong>Our brain operates autonomously<\/strong>, and we are only aware of a small percentage of its activity.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever tried to sit quietly and clear your mind, it\u2019s likely that you didn\u2019t succeed\u2014or if you did, it wasn\u2019t for more than a few seconds.<\/p>\r\n<p>Our brain constantly throws thoughts, images, or memories at us, automatically.<\/p>\r\n<p>It\u2019s very common to experience what are known as <strong>intrusive thoughts<\/strong>. These thoughts appear out of nowhere and, sometimes, their content can be completely opposite to who we are or what we would ever do.<\/p>\r\n<p>You might be standing near train tracks and your brain says, \u201cWhat if you jump?\u201d Or talking to your father-in-law in the kitchen, and you imagine stabbing him with a knife. Or maybe you see someone on the street and suddenly imagine having sex with them.<\/p>\r\n<p>One research study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2211364913000675\">94% of participants experienced at least one such thought over a three-month period<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Obviously, you would never act on these thoughts (well, maybe the last one), but your brain doesn\u2019t care. It just hands you the image or idea for free.<\/p>\r\n<p>Why?<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3153\" src=\"https:\/\/therapy-project.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screen_Shot_2019-10-25_at_3.13.33_PM-300x169.png\" alt=\"This is a two-panel comic. Your brain contains billions of neural connections that are mostly activated chaotically. Some of these connections surface in your consciousness as intrusive thoughts.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>The issue is<\/strong> that if I\u2019m normally worried about whether I\u2019m a good person, a pervert, or if I\u2019m going crazy, when an intrusive thought comes up that aligns with those fears, it will trigger my alarms.<\/p>\r\n<p>If none of those worries were on my mind or part of how I see myself, the intrusive thought would likely pass unnoticed as just a fleeting \u201cmental fart\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p>If the thought distresses me, I might try to suppress it, make it disappear, or avoid having it again. Unfortunately, multiple studies show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theemotionmachine.com\/the-white-bear-problem-how-resisting-negative-thoughts-only-feeds-them-more\/\"><strong>trying to suppress certain thoughts usually has the opposite effect<\/strong><\/a>, making them appear more frequently. Thoughts are ultimately <strong>just<\/strong> <strong>thoughts<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Problems<\/strong> related to intrusive thoughts often <strong>arise because of how we react to them<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>If we react by rigidly, insistently, and anxiously trying to avoid, suppress, or push these thoughts away, we can create a problem.<\/p>\r\n<p>Since we cannot control intrusive thoughts and trying to do so usually backfires, we might feel stuck. As we perceive this as a problem we can\u2019t control or \u201cfix,\u201d we might feel increasingly trapped and overwhelmed by these thoughts, fueling our anxiety and amplifying the problem.<\/p>\r\n<p>It\u2019s normal to feel alarmed and want to engage in control or avoidance behaviors when these thoughts touch on our fears and insecurities.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, it\u2019s important to recognize that these responses are problematic and unlikely to help\u2014in fact, they will probably make things worse.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What should I do when I have intrusive thoughts?<\/h2>\r\n<p>As with many things in psychology, <strong>the key is acceptance<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Accepting that the thought exists means acknowledging its presence without feeling the need to suppress, avoid, or control it.<\/p>\r\n<p>It may be unpleasant, and we might wish it hadn\u2019t appeared, but we don\u2019t need to compulsively suppress it or assume we\u2019re crazy, dangerous, or that something is seriously wrong with us. This thoughts are a normal and common occurrence.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Observing the thought without judgment<\/strong>, without trying to control it, and without expecting it to disappear immediately is the best way to deal with it. When we learn that having these thoughts doesn\u2019t mean anything significant and doesn\u2019t pose a danger, our reaction to them will become calmer, and our alarms won\u2019t go off.<\/p>\r\n<p>When we\u2019re unbothered, we stop worrying about whether they appear or not, and over time, they will likely show up less and less. Even if they do reappear, we won\u2019t mind\u2014and it won\u2019t be a problem.<\/p>\r\n<p>This approach may sound counterintuitive because we naturally want to \u201cfix\u201d anything we perceive as a problem.<\/p>\r\n<p>But <strong>intrusive thoughts are not a problem<\/strong>\u2014they are a normal phenomenon experienced by most people.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>They only become a problem when we fight against them, try to control them, or worry that they define us.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\r\n<p>Having unpleasant, bizarre, or otherwise intrusive thoughts is normal.<\/p>\r\n<p>Experiencing intrusive thoughts about things you\u2019d never do or that deeply shock you happens to most people. It\u2019s not a problem.<\/p>\r\n<p>Problems arise when we react by trying to suppress, control, or avoid such thoughts, which can create a rebound effect and make them more frequent. This might leave us feeling helpless and unable to escape, further amplifying our distress.<\/p>\r\n<p>The solution lies in understanding that thoughts are normal\u2014just thoughts, no matter how unpleasant. By accepting their presence without adding layers of judgment like, \u201cSomething is seriously wrong with me,\u201d or \u201cI must be crazy,\u201d we avoid falling into a trap of struggling against them.<\/p>\r\n<p>Practicing mindfulness can be a helpful way to approach these thoughts and ensure they don\u2019t become a problem.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you\u2019d like to gain a deeper understanding of Estaba todo nevado, hab\u00eda varios metros de nieve all\u00e1 fuera. Y no es que no pudiera salir\u2026 simplemente no lo hice. No os puedo explicar muy bien a d\u00eda de hoy porqu\u00e9. Tampoco se lo dije a nadie. Todo esto muchos a\u00f1os antes de pandemia.\n \nAntes de eso, creo que sent\u00eda bastante \u201cdependencia\u201d a estar con personas continuamente (aqu\u00ed est\u00e1 la clave), tener planes constantemente, rodearme, incluso a tener personas atentas a m\u00ed. Despu\u00e9s de esto, no me volvi\u00f3 a dar tanto miedo estar conmigo misma. (Ahora lo necesito y es de lo que m\u00e1s me gusta). Tambi\u00e9n me puse a buscar personas con las que entablar una relaci\u00f3n genuina y significativa. Es curiosa la mezcla.
